RED WITCH X SirenX

In honour of the eponymous "Sonnwende" (summer solstice) in "Sonnwendviertel" (the name of an urban development area in Vienna) - and helped by the elements of water, wind, sun and fire, RED WITCH and SirenX developed an early Solstice ritual during a site-specific residency hosted by the performance platform Raw Matters Vienna in May and June 2023.

 

Together they chose a dominant feature of the new quarter as their research base: a bridge called Arsenalsteg.

 

Guided by elemental forces and intimations of spirits, ghosts, and mythological beings they created serial acts of invocation.

 

The performance unfolded in three parts:

Firstly,  Red Witch and SirenX introduced themselves through a playful game of appearing and vanishing followed by random interactions with passersby.

The audience was invited to watch at a distance from a precisely composed visual frame.

 

Secondly, the tingling of cymbals led the audience next to and under the bridge, where SirenX and Red Witch continued their invocation through sound.

 

Finally, in reference to the agricultural history of the area, the ritual ended on the bridge with an offering of oranges.
